Press Release

Bohman-Knäpper is pleased to present Barbara Probst - Exposures, an intimate show that presents a selection of her works from 2008 - 2011.

Barbara Probst was born in 1964 in Munich, Germany. Lives and works in New York and Munich.

Probst’s works consist of photographic images taken by numerous cameras at the exact same time. They mediate the déjà vu-like feeling of being at more than one place at the same time. Despite the closeness of the cameras and the simultaneity of their exposures the images are extremely different in style and ambiance. Barbara Probst’s work stresses the fact that the photographic image is a highly selective medium. It questions the idea of the photographic truth and our subjective perception. Each work is a mental puzzle that makes us reflect on how we read images. Probst’s photographs are not so much about the motive, the object or even the photographer’s choice of angle. It’s more about the viewer that becomes a part in the making of the work. Probst’s cameras tell a number of stories and she makes us believe in every one of them.

Recent shows include a solo exhibition at Pasquart Kunsthaus, Biel, Swizterland, 2020 and at Le Bal, Paris, 2019. Barbara Probst is currently exhibited at Kunsthalle Nürnberg in Nuremberg, Germany, in Barbara Probst: Streets, Fashion, Nudes, Still Lifes. The exhibition runs through September 12, 2021.
